Check whether your thumbnail title repeats the image in Search

Use the Search preview to see whether a title adds context instead of repeating the thumbnail.

A two-step Search-layout review: name what the thumbnail image says first, then write the distinct context the title adds.
When the image and title repeat the same message, revise one so the combined message becomes more specific.

Look at the image before you read the title

In a Search preview, first cover or ignore the title and name the visible subject, action, or outcome. If you cannot name it, fix the image message before rewriting the title. If you can name it, the next question is whether the title contributes information you cannot already see.

This order is reproducible in MyThumbTester: load one local image, choose Search, and inspect the same image before and after reading the title. It is a visible-message check, not a prediction of clicks, ranking, or views.

Keep a title when it adds one missing piece

A title earns its space when it adds a constraint, outcome, question, timing detail, or reason to care that is absent from the image. For example, an image can show a person and a mountain; the title can tell the viewer what changed, what was attempted, or why that moment matters.

Do not make the title repeat a label already made clear by the image. If both say the same thing, the combined message becomes less specific even though both individual parts are readable.

Use a two-column note for the decision

Write two short entries after looking at Search: “image says” and “title adds.” If the second entry is blank or duplicates the first, revise one of them. Keep the image and layout fixed while editing the title so the note refers to one visible change.

Then switch the same input to Sidebar or Mobile. The title may be truncated or take less visual weight there, so the image still needs to carry the basic subject on its own.

What this check cannot measure

A Search mockup cannot reveal which results appear beside a video for every viewer, how an audience responds, click-through rate, ranking, or views. It records whether the image and title communicate distinct parts of one idea in an illustrative layout.
